Since I'm getting ready to buy some new rubber, I've been keeping an eye on any sort of advertisement for tire sales. In yesterdays paper, I got an ad for Pep Boys. Now most of the time I'd just toss this one aside while reading the paper. But this caught my attention. Right now they are having a sale where you buy 3 tires and get the 4th free. Only catch is they have to do the mounting / balancing / new valve stems / etc. No big deal there since I have no need for new tires to just sit in the shed.

So yesterday afternoon, much to the dismay of my wife because it's her birthday, I load everyone in the GMC and head over to Pep Boys. They have two tires that mainly interest me. First is the Definity Dakota A/T. This is a knock off of the ever popular BFG A/T. 50,000 mile warranty too. And at a cost of $110 each. Second is the Definity Dakota M/T. Nothing too fancy about this tire besides the 40,000 mile warranty and the price of $100 each.

After a bit of research it looks like they are made by Cooper Tire and Rubber Co. I know Cooper makes some decent tires so I figure these can't be all that bad. So I wanted to know if anyone has any opinions of these tires. Not really looking for opinions on which one I should run. Not really looking for opinions on what you think is better. Just want to know if you have ever run these tires or know of someone who has and what your/their opinions are regarding them.

$300-$330 plus install for a set of 4 is really inviting for sure. Just don't want to know I'm going to need to replace them in a year because they all fell apart.

that MT looks fairly aggressive and the milage warranty is right on, I've never gotten more than about 30k on any MT's I've had... (BFG's MT and Wrangler MTR's)

What are they charging for the mounting etc... Could you walk out with new MT's a 40,000 mile warranty and installation for under $375? I'm in the market for new tires as well so I am curious. Also what size are the ones at that price?

The ones I am looking at are 31x10.5-R15. I called them and the guy said they are about $10 each for mounting and balancing, plus "a few" bucks for new valve stems, and about $6 each for their road hazard warranty. You have to buy all those things to get the buy three get one free pricing. The guy at the West Valley store has my size in stock. I'm most likely going to get them tomorrow. Hard to get (4) 31's for less than $400. Plus the 40,000 mile warranty. I'll probably take them somewhere and have them siped too after I get them.

Hmmm I will have to call them and find out if they have the same deal (4 for 3) on 33 x 12.5's. Thanks for the heads up though that might be a killer deal :clap:

Well, went and got a set of the Definity Dakota M/T's last night. Got 31x10.5-R15's. Out the door price was $526.17. The free tire was charged in the price shown. I have to mail in a rebate for it, which I figured was probably the case. Either way it's still a good deal.

Breakdown is as follows:
(4) tires @ $99.99 each = $399.96
(4) state tire tax @ $1.00 each = $4.00
(4) tire mounting = free
(4) heavy-duty balancing @ $10.99 each = $43.96
(4) Road Hazard Warranty @ $8.49 each = $33.96
(4) rubber valve stems ~ $2.99 each = $11.96
(1) Utah sales tax = $32.33
Total = $526.17 - $99.99 mail-in rebate = $426.18

Pretty good deal IMO for a 40,000 mile warrantied mud terrain tire. I'm not sure what other sizes this tire is available in. I didn't grab a brochure and I never could find something on the net. If you're interested, just give them a call. One thing to mention though, in order to qualify for the rebate, you have to purchase the road hazard warranty and the mounting/balancing. So if you plan to take these home and have it done cheaper somewhere else, you won't get back your money on that one tire. And you have to have your rotations done at Pep Boys to qualify for the 40,000 mile warranty. If you have any problems and you can't prove they rotated your tires every 6,000 miles, you're basically screwed. Of course, that seems to be the case wherever you get tires. I personally rotate mine every oil change. I doubt I'll take it across town every time I want a rotation. Easier to just do it myself some times. I'm pretty confident I'll be able to get 40,000 miles on them anyway.

As for my opinions thus far, excellent! Dry traction seems to be every bit as good as my Bridgestone Dueller A/T's. Haven't tried the mud, snow, or rain yet. I'll update on that at a later time. They are a bit noisier than the A/T's I had before, but I expected some. However, they don't whine nearly as much as I thought they would. They seemed to have no problem balancing them either. You can't feel the lugs slapping the pavement at low speeds, or even tell at all they are a M/T tire at any speeds IMO.

i know its too late but my uncle runs the AT on his cummins diesel (33x12.5) and has been for the last 6 years. he loves them. and he is now running them on his jeep (35x12.5) hope you like em. i might have to get them also!!! :headbanger:

So Chad, you've had these tires now for 7 months, what's the general consensus for highway and trail riding?

Update is this:

These tires grip better than the notorious BFG MT's IMO. They do great on dry pavement, and not nearly as bad as I would have thought in wet roads. I may end up having them siped later this fall when it snows if I feel they need it. They grip in the mud as good or better than the BFG MT's, and are good enough for me on gravel roads.

The only downside is the sidewall. It's only a 2-ply. I would prefer more, but I haven't had any punctures yet. I've aired down to 15PSI many times and haven't had any issues there.

All in all, if you're a mild wheeler like me, these tires rock. Forest Lake and Rattlesnake are about the most "extreme" trails I enjoy, so I really don't do much more. And having four 31's mounted, balanced, OTD for $400 is a steal. That's of course after the rebate when you buy them on the buy 3 get one free sale.

Looks like a big-o xt.... Both tires made by cooper..
